This course will teach you how to obtain blood specimens accurately with the proper technique, how to work well under pressure, communicate effectively, and how to be committed to delivering quality healthcare. This course is taught through lecture, hands-on skills lab, and clinical externship. Students will be trained in the art of phlebotomy, utilizing various blood collection methods: vacuum collection devices, syringes, winged infusion sets (butterfly needles), capillary dermal puncture, and blood culture specimen collection. Proper technique and precautions will be taught with emphasis on Universal Precautions, infection prevention, 3-way identification process, specimen labeling, quality of specimen collection, and personal wellness. Students will gain an overview of the human body, including Medical Terminology, Human Anatomy and Physiology, and the Circulatory System.
